Dr Joseph Ibbitson
My Experience
I have been working with people facing a wide range of challenges in a variety of roles over the past 15 years. This includes work with people of all ages, dealing with mental health difficulties, cognitive issues, adjustment to physical health problems and relationship based problems. I completed my Doctoral training in Clinical Psychology in 2020. Since then, I’ve enjoyed continuing to work with people of all ages and backgrounds. I have a particular passion for working with boys and young men, recognising the unique challenges this population faces.
I can help with:
- Anxiety, including panic
- Depression and low mood
- Family and relationship based issues
- Identity related difficulties
- Living with long-term health conditions
- Stress
My Values
I am committed to trying to gain a compassionate understanding of my client’s unique experience. I do this partly by working to reduce any blame and shame that people may feel about their mental health and/or coming to see a therapist. I also feel it is important that clients are supported to identify their personal strengths and resources, and how these fit in with their hopes and intentions for their lives.
I understand from my own previous experience, that coming to speak to a stranger about personal issues can feel scary, particularly at a time when things feel so challenging. I will always endeavour to help you to feel emotionally safe and understood in our appointments. I believe this is especially important because feeling safe and understood by your therapist is an important element of a positive outcome.
The Models I Work With
I am trained and experienced in using a range of therapeutic models including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Family and Systemic approaches. These models place a different emphasis on factors that keep us stuck, when faced with psychological challenges. Sometimes I use these models in pure form, and sometimes I integrate the ideas from different models depending on the clients need.
Clinic Information
I offer in-person appointments on Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s at a central location in Bournemouth. I also offer online appointments if that’s preferred.
