Samuel Afari
My Experience
I am a BABCP fully accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist (CBT) with many years of experience working within the National Health Service (NHS) and in private practice. I am currently employed as a Psychological Therapist in the NHS alongside my private clinical work.
I have extensive experience supporting individuals with a wide range of emotional and mental health difficulties, including:
- Alcohol and substance misuse
- Anger issues
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Bipolar disorder
- Challenges associated with emotional regulation, coping skills, emotional resilience and problem-solving
- Couples work
- Depression
- Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
- Low self-esteem
- Phobias
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Personality disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Stress-related difficulties
I also work with spirituality as part of therapy where this is meaningful for the individual. My clinical interests include CBT for Psychosis and culturally adapted CBT (including Christianity-informed CBT).
My Values
I value uniqueness and diversity and strongly believe in equality, respect, and empowerment of the individual. I recognise that each person’s life experiences and personal story are unique, and I therefore approach therapy with openness, curiosity, and a non-judgemental stance.
I offer a safe, compassionate, and collaborative therapeutic space where clients feel heard and respected. I work closely with individuals to explore their strengths and capabilities, supporting them to manage difficulties more effectively. My aim is to promote recovery, improve daily functioning, and reduce psychological distress.
I am passionate about equipping people with practical tools to cope with life’s challenges. While CBT requires commitment and effort, I have witnessed many individuals achieve meaningful and lasting change through therapy.
Clinic Information
I currently hold a clinic in Southampton, offering both face-to-face and virtual appointments. Appointments are available on Saturdays during the daytime and evening.
I work with individuals aged 16 years and above.
The Models I Work With
My primary therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Where clinically appropriate, I integrate elements from other evidence-based approaches, including:
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
- Mindfulness-based approaches
- Cope, Comprehend & Connect (CCC)
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) (informed practice)
This integrative approach allows therapy to be tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.
