Dr Sophie Bergen
Having worked in psychological services within the NHS for over 10 years I am highly experienced in working therapeutically with a vast range of clients. I provide treatment for specific psychological difficulties including depression, anxiety, panic, OCD, psychosis and bipolar, and also provide a therapeutic space for people to explore relational difficulties, bereavement, adjustment to life circumstances and life stage transitions. In addition to my experience working with adults, older adults and children, I have specialist experience of assessing and working with people with learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorders.
Above all I value the importance of the therapeutic relationship and am therefore warm, open and non-judgemental in my approach. I believe that opportunities for positive change occur within the safety of a supportive therapeutic relationship and I feel privileged to work alongside my clients as they embark on this journey. I consider it very important to understand the context that each client brings and therefore look beyond specific problems in isolation. I also believe that an individual is the expert on their own experience and therefore support clients to draw on their inner strengths and eventually become their own therapist.
The models I work with
In my therapeutic work, I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) and Systemic approaches including Narrative Therapy. These models can be used in their ‘pure’ form. However, I often use an integrative approach to fit the needs of each individual client. I also carry out cognitive assessment and use Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) when working with clients with learning disabilities.
