Dr Richard Doherty
I am a highly specialist Clinical Psychologist currently working for the prestigious NHS Trust of St Thomas’ Hospital. I also work with Oxford University teaching on their Clinical Doctorate programme and with Royal Holloway University of London teaching on their Cognitive Behavioural Therapy programme.
I have worked at St Thomas’ hospital as the Lead Psychologist for the complex sleep service, and headache service, and in my current role I am the Senior Clinical Psychologist in critical care unit.
Alongside my NHS work, I work privately with specific issues, such as anxiety and depression, work-related stress, sleep related difficulties and physical health conditions including chronic pain and migraine.
My approach is based on the principle that psychological and physiological difficulties are a response to overwhelming feelings and threat. My work helps people understand and reduce their sense of threat by developing psychological skills. I am an evidence based practitioner using best practice to support skills development for a better future
I completed my Honours Degree (first class) in Psychology from the University of London. I then went on to obtain a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, and a further Diploma in CBT Therapy, awarded with Distinction.
My work to date my work has taught me that psychological difficulties are not dysfunctional, but rather the logical response to a person’s life, experience. In line with this, the treatment I provide seeks to help people be less impacted by their symptoms, but also to work with the circumstances driving the symptoms. Through the course of therapy we will work together in an accessible and collaborative way, to produce meaningful and lasting change.
The Models I Work With
I am experienced in delivering Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness informed therapy for a range of psychological and physical health difficulties.
