Dr Liz Millward
I have experience of working with a range of difficulties, including stress, low self-esteem, bereavement, trauma, anxiety and depression, but most of my experience is in severe and enduring mental health difficulties.
I have worked in the NHS since 2011, and during this time have worked to support people in all life stages, from a diverse range of backgrounds. In my NHS work at present, I specialise in supporting people in later life, and neuropsychology (the study of the structure and function of the brain). This work means that I often work with individuals that are experiencing loss and those who are struggling with long term health conditions. I also support families and couples that are going through stressful life events. I have specific interests in using third-wave therapies, like mindfulness and acceptance and commitment therapy.
I value open and honest therapeutic relationships. I believe that through good relationships, both in the therapy room and outside of it, we can change and evolve as people. I endeavour to use collaboration and pacing to achieve a safe and comfortable therapeutic space, so that my clients can explore their own experiences, and build on their own resilience to overcome their difficulties.
The Models I Work With
I predominantly use an integrative and formulation led approach. This means that I develop a psychological understanding of a person’s difficulties with them, and then use this understanding to inform therapy. This ensures that every intervention is person centred and tailored to need. My training as a psychologist included equal training in Cognitive Behavioural therapies (CBT, ACT, Mindfulness), Systemic therapies, and psychodynamic therapies.
I also use manualised approaches using CBT, Mindfulness and ACT when a less intense intervention is needed, often over a shorter number of sessions.
